At the heart of Sophie Foden-Pattinson’s photographic practice lies a continued fascination with the interplay between light and form, and the emotive agency of colour. Through its sincere and seductive treatment of light and its relationship with both space and subject, Foden-Pattinson’s work explores the poetic undertones of her photographic scenes. Whether consciously orchestrated from the outset or candid, staging objects in a studio or capturing figures mid-movement, the narratives that emerge from her photographs exist in the liminal space between fact and fantasy – exclusive to neither and transcending both.

Taking cues from artistic references across Renaissance paintings, Dutch still-lifes, cinematography, and set design, Foden-Pattinson’s photographs carry a signature ethereal quality, often focusing on moments of tension or transition. Her subjects are vast, ranging from dramatic compositions of organic and decorative elements, sharp and stylized portraits, to lyrical images of bodies in motion. Guided by her keen understanding of light and the rhetorical agency of its manipulation, Foden-Pattinson turns her camera’s gaze to draw out both the tactile and emotional charge from within her chosen subject.

Simple yet sublime, Foden-Pattinson’s compositions look to the creative legacies of photography, dance, and set design to construct compelling images that invite the viewer to immerse themselves within the frame. At once quietly tender and vibrant, the theatrical cadence of her photographs equally engages with the narrative potential of photography. Through her work, Foden-Pattinson simultaneously explores the bounds of and nuances of photography’s foundations, teasing the relationship between light, colour, form, and frame, and unearths the psychological and emotional lens that lies beneath.

Born in London, Foden-Pattinson is primarily based across London and Copenhagen. Receiving her BA in Photography from Manchester School of Art in 2017, Foden-Pattinson then apprenticed under Jabez Bartlett, the award-winning set designer for Streeters, and further developed her technical acuity while working with the celebrated photographer and filmmaker Julian Broad from 2018-2020. She has since worked with renowned photographers such as Casper Sejersen, Philip Messmann, and Drew Vickers, acted as Lead Digital Technician on shoots for Rains, Tekla, Mark Cross, Raf Simons x Kvadrat, and Vogue Scandinavia, and was First Assistant on shoots for clients including Robbie Williams, Mika, Orlebar Brown, Harrods, Harper’s Bazaar, D La Republica, Celeste, Dwell and World of Interiors Magazine also on the film and music set’s of King Krule and The Crown.
